The Batu Pahat District is a district in the state of Johor, Malaysia that lies at the southeast of Johor Bahru. Batu Pahat is the 16th largest urban area in Malaysia in terms of population. It has a population Majority population in Batu Pahat is Chinese followed by Malays and Indians.

The town acquired the name Batu Pahat, which means “chiselled stone”, from the quarries near the estuary. There are multiple theories as to the origin of this name. In around 1456, the Siamese army, led by Admiral Awi Di Chu, camped in Batu Pahat before attacking Malacca.

Legend has it that the invading Siamese troops were chiselling rocks at a rocky spot in the coastal village of Kampung Minyak Beku, in hope to get fresh water during their retreat from the Melaka troops, led by Tun Perak, the famous Bendahara (Prime Minister) of the Malacca Empire. Another possible explanation for the origin of the name is the fortress (“a famosa”) built by the Portuguese after capturing Melaka, which was made from granite rocks taken from the mouth of Sungai Batu Pahat.

1. Old Street Batu Pahat

Old Street in Batu Pahat is a must in your bucket-list if you want to emerge yourself into a fancy night-seeing environment. It is located between Jalan Kluang, Jalan Parit Besar and Taman Sri Jaya.

This commercial place stands together from two blocks. Shop lot ranging from restaurants which can tantalise your taste bud to entertainment which you can spend your weekend there. Out of the most popular which is the roof garden. As its operating hour starts at night, this will be its peak hour. 2. Penggaram Square Batu Pahat

No visit to Batu Pahat is complete without checking in at the town landmark. The square features a monument with a fountain depicting the famouse chiselled rock that gave the name of the town – Batu Pahat. The monument was crave based on the history of Siamese soldiers chiselling rocks at Minyak Beku village to collect drinking water after being defeated by the Malacca troops in the 15th century. The monument was built here during the town’s centennial celebration.

This sites is perfect for evening strolls and night time chill. During normal days, there will be stalls along the roadside selling foods, drinks, and also toys for kids. Some photographer even declare the Penggaram Square is a must have in their Vlog or photography.

The chiselled rock monument was previously a water fountain with lights, but it has been rebuilt into grass filled space and many LEDs trees which helps to attract more locals and travellers here.


3. Kampung Segenting Batu Pahat

Fish touching, sounds attracted? The temple at Segenting, Batu Pahat is well-known of fish touching. As from locals, they believed that touching of these arapaima fishes would bring good luck to the person. The place itself is a fishing village. The arapaima fishes may be huge but it is really tamed. If you are lucky, they will even swim to you once you put your hand into the pond.

This fishing village is a perfect site for people who need a real retreat from the busy city life. Worshippers visit here for their famous God of Chinese, including Da Bo Gong, Ma Zu goddess of the sea, Hai Long Wang the dragon king of the sea which protect and bless the villagers and the fishermen. Along the road to the temple, there will also a few restaurants by the roadside which is popular for their seafood delicacies. The price is affordable and food is also delicious too. Famous seafood restaurants there was Lover Bridge Resort’s Sea Front Thai Food Restaurant and Ship Village Seafood Restaurant.

You can also see a long bridge at the other side from the temple. The bridge was previously build as a jetty for local fishermen. Bring your loved one or family to this pretty fishing village to fully enjoy the romantic backdrop of Lovers’ Bridge. In old times, the bridge is wooden structured. It has been converted into lime bridge due to long time exposure to sun and moisture but still retains the wooden deck. At night during tides, there will be also some fishermen fishing there. It will be drizzling to drive up there but trust me, the scenery is totally worth it.


4. Soga Perdana Amenity Forest

Ever remember your last step on jungle trekking or a trip to a forest reserve? If it has been a long time you cannot even remember, this will be the perfect site in this second largest town in Johor. Although the state Johor is facing rapid advancement, nature reserve is well protected by the government. Soga Perdana Amenity Forest is one of such sacred and untouched by human hands forest and it will be an amazing and thrilling adventure to spend a few days in.

This recreational forest is located not far away from town centre, about only 5 kilometres away. It is considered as a convenient and safe place to visit as it is not too far from civilization, located around at the end of residential area. Make sure you stop by and enjoy this beauty of nature before heading off to another destination. It welcome you by many hidden trasures of nature which spans over 49 hectares of land and over a height of 600ft at peak.

Do keep your eyes open for friendly wildlife such as monkeys and many different kinds of birds as you trek along the way. One point to be make sure which is do not try to feed the wildlife and disturb the habitat which those wildlife call as their home. You will definitely be relax and unwind during your tranquil walk as serene and lush greenery surrounds you. Do not worry about getting under scorching sun as those tall and magnificent trees that tower over the forest floor will give you the shade that you will need.

The recreational forest is famous for its perfect spot for exercise. Elderly can have their line dancing and other activities because the environment here is a tranquil one. Since lime staircase is built, it is therefore suitable for both children and adult with moderate level of fitness. Hike your way up and there will be also a man built sightseeing tower. If you are looking for a more challenging routes, there will be four hidden routes from different entry to the recreational park, as from local hikers. Route A, B, C, and D can be chosen accordingly to difficulty level. However, these four routes have no lime staircase and it requires higher level of fitness. Get ready for soil particle all over your shoes before you decide to challenge on these four routes.


5. Taman Rekreasi Tasik Y

Batu Pahat is a town suitable for family leisure. One of the well-known site is Taman Rekreasi Tasik Y. The most crowded site for sports and leisure not only in evening, but also morning and night time. Sound interesting when not only during evening? Yes you heard me right! The place will be more crowded in weekend, the only free time over the week for family times.

There are plenty of sport equipment for adults and entertainment facilities for children at this recreational park. Sport enthusiast will head over without any reason but for jogging, as the track built was serene and surrounded by lush green of trees. The track is built along the side of lake, what else is more serene and joyful to jog around the lake with fresh air? But one thing to be remembered, the lake is prohibited from fishing due to the damage done to the environment.

This park is the childhood memory of every local grown up. Before technologies like tablet and smart devices start booming, all childhood time is being spent here. 7. Pantai Minyak Beku

Pantai Minyak Beku may looks like any ordinary beach at its first glance. Its strange name actually comes from its history. Back in time, Siamese soldiers arrived on the beach and looked for water by digging a well. However, instead of water, they found thick oil – hence the name of the beach.

Look for the historical plaque that is placed by the Tourism Ministry for more information about the origin of the well and its link to the town’s name. Picnicking, fishing and enjoying the sunset or sunrise are some of the activities you can enjoy at Pantai Minyak Beku.

Besides that, there is also a ferry terminal where you can hire a fisherman for a short boat ride to Pulau Silju, a small island nearby. Be sure to stock up on drinks and snacks from the shops before you go!


8. Galeri Dato Onn

Formerly, Galeri Dato’ Onn was a government quarters and also the official residence of Dato’ Onn Jaafar during his tenure as District Officer in Btu Pahat. A respectable figure during his time, Dato Onn Jaafar is remembered by locals for his contribution to the nation’s independence, as well as his role in the formation of United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) and Rural Industrial Development Authority (RIDA). Johoreans highly regard Onn Jaafar as a local hero and a nationalist. He was also a former Menteri Besar of Johor. 9. Lovers’ Bridge

The bridge of lover is a famous local attraction for tourist especially for dating couples. The Lovers’ Bridge located at Jalan Kampung Segenting in Batu Pahat. It is actually a jetty used to be docking and undocking platform for the fishermen in the old days.

However, it has become a romantic spot for the dating couples to take a slow walk on the bridge and enjoy the sunset. Some locals believe that, after a guy and a girl take a walk on the bridge, they would fall in love and become couples. It could be the reason why couples love to visit Lover’s Bridge.

11. Batu Pahat Diy Playground

Batu Pahat Diy Playground is a community park that set up by using recycled materials. This self-made community park in Batu Pahat has many recreational facilities such as pirate ships, seesaw, swing and slides. The recycled materials such as tires and buckets donated by the residents were used to decorate the park. Batu Pahat Diy Playground is one of the famous place for the families to have family day or even host a BBQ party. It is free of charge and closes at 11.45 in the evening every day due to safety consideration.

It only costs you RM280 for 10 entrances and there is no time limit for each entrance. The Creator Gallery is the best place for you and your children as it is a designated place for the kids to play and for the moms and dads to eat and drink.

Besides, the activities available in The Creator Gallery are mainly fun games where both parents and children can play together, creating an awareness of importance of accompanying the young children while raising them.

13. Uncle Lim’s Farm

Uncle Lim’s Farm which located at Batu Pahat is one of the best destination for you if you want to get closer to nature. The owner of the farm, Uncle Lim opened his farm to public a few years ago in order to let people, especially children to experience the farming life.

He believes that, children will know and realize the importance of food and agriculture by experiencing how hard is it to plant the vegetables. In the farm, you can see a lot of vegetables such as eggplant, cabbage and bitter gourd.

The cafeteria and kitchenette can be found in a double-storey building which located in the middle of the garden. You can learn how to cook by using the kitchenette. Uncle Lim’s farm is a perfect place for you to relax and recharge as well as learn how to plant.
